Silica

Silica gel is a highly active adsorbent material. It is an amorphous material. Its chemical formula is mSiO2. NH2O. It does not react with any substance except strong base and hydrofluoric acid. It is insoluble in water and any solvent. It is non-toxic and tasteless, and its chemical properties are stable. Different types of silica gels have different microporous structures because of their different manufacturing methods. The chemical composition and physical structure of silica gel determine that it has many characteristics which are difficult to replace by other similar materials: high adsorption performance, good thermal stability, chemical stability, high mechanical strength and so on. Silica gel can be divided into macroporous silica gel, coarse porous silica gel, B-type silica gel and fine porous silica gel according to its pore size.

Generally speaking, silica gel can be divided into organic silica gel and inorganic silica gel according to its properties and components.

Inorganic silica gel is a kind of highly active adsorption material, which is usually prepared by reaction of sodium silicate with sulfuric acid and a series of post-treatment processes such as aging and acid bubbles. Silica gel belongs to amorphous substance and its chemical formula is mSiO 2.nH 2. It is insoluble in water and any solvents, non-toxic and tasteless, stable in chemical properties, and does not react with any substance except strong alkali and hydrofluoric acid. Different types of silica gels have different microporous structures because of their different manufacturing methods. The chemical composition and physical structure of silica gel determine that it has many irreplaceable characteristics of other similar materials: high adsorption performance, good thermal stability, stable chemical properties, high mechanical strength, household use as desiccant, humidity regulator, deodorant, etc. and industrial use as oil hydrocarbon decolorizer and catalyst carrier. Pressure swing adsorbent, separation and purification agent for fine chemical industry, beer stabilizer, paint thickener, toothpaste friction agent, extinction agent, etc.

Silicone gel is a kind of organosilicon compound, which contains Si-C bond and at least one organic group is directly connected with silicon atom. It is customary to regard those compounds which connect organosilicon with silicon atom through oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen as organosilicon compound. Among them, polysiloxane, which is composed of silicon-oxygen bond (-Si-O-Si-) as the framework, is the most abundant, the most deeply studied and widely used type of organosilicon compounds, accounting for more than 90% of the total dosage.

Extruded silica gel is more common, such as the sealing ring on the household rice cooker, which is called the silicone sealing ring of the rice cooker.
Molded silica gel is more complex and irregular in shape, including silica gel bowl, silica gel ice lattice, silica gel cake mould and so on.
